‘Finally it’s happening’: Pep Guardiola makes admission about Rodri’s Manchester City form

Pep Guardiola has revealed what he thinks about Rodri’s recent displays, ahead of Manchester City’s FA Cup fifth round tie at St James’ Park.

Rodri hit the peak of his career when he was named as the 2023 Ballon d’Or winner, but things have been tough for the Spaniard since he missed most of the 2024/25 season due to injury.

Already this season Rodri has suffered further setbacks, with hamstring and knee problems causing him to miss 18 matches for Man City.

However, the 29-year-old has been fit for a good few weeks now and he is starting every week, often remaining on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

Pep Guardiola heaps praise on Rodri’s progress at Man City

Rodri found his way onto the scoresheet during Man City’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest and he has looked more like his usual self in recent weeks.

Pep Guardiola is certainly pleased with what he is seeing, coupled with the fact that Rodri has remained free from any further injuries.

He said in his press conference: “Finally it’s happening like we wanted a long time ago, when he [Rodri] came back, to not have setbacks, have consistency to play, play, and play.

“Step by step he’s getting better and better. Everybody knows it.”

Man City will want Rodri to sign a new contract

With Rodri building up a consistent run of appearances, now would be the perfect time to tie him down to a new contract.

The City star’s current deal expires in 2027, which leads to the possibility that he could depart this summer so his club can gain a transfer fee on his sale.

However, the plan will very much be to hold onto Rodri for as long as possible, which makes future negotiations so important.
