Manchester City were the team celebrating after defeating Leeds United, but the match was marred by unsavoury scenes early in the first half.
Saturday saw Manchester City beat Leeds in another match which has kept their Premier League title hopes alive and well.
Ahead of the game it was announced that there would be a pause for the Man City players to break their Ramadan fast, which occurred around the 11th minute.
However, this moment was met by boos from sections of the home support, who had no issues voicing their disapproval for the stoppage.
Pep Guardiola calls on football fans to respect religions
It was impossible to ignore the loud whistling and jeering at Elland Road and Pep Guardiola was well aware of what was going on.
The manager did not sound surprised by the distasteful incident, but he has called on those booing to respect people’s beliefs.
Speaking in his post match interview, Guardiola said: “It’s the modern world, right? Look what’s happening in the world right now again, right?
“Respect the religions, respect the diversity – that is the point! It’s what it is, unfortunately.
“The question is: can they do it or not? Can they do it? Take a break for one minute to do that? What is the problem? Is there a problem?”
Leeds fans were hardly affected by the pause
One Leeds player could be seen confused as to why the game had stopped, but once the referee explained, there was a clear acceptance in his facial expression of what was happening.
The break was ultimately very short and did not have any real impact on proceedings, which leads to the question, why were the supporters really booing?
This was a case of intolerance in the stands and it has been rightly called out by Guardiola for exactly what it is.
