Manchester City must take inspiration from Carabao Cup win eight years ago today

Manchester City won the Carabao Cup on this day in 2018 and they will need to overcome the same opponent to secure two domestic trophies this season.

It has been eight years since Pep Guardiola lifted his first trophy at Manchester City – the Carabao Cup.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring that day with a beautiful lob over the head of Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina.

City led 1-0 at half-time and doubled their advantage in the second half when Vincent Kompany found the net following a corner kick.

Finally, David Silva wrapped up the win with a diagonal effort which nestled into the bottom right corner, giving Ospina no chance of making a save.

Manchester City must defeat Arsenal again

So much has changed since the 2017/18 season and yet the two clubs competing for a trophy are exactly the same.

Manchester City will do battle with Arsenal next month in the latest edition of the Carabao Cup final and that is just one of two upcoming clashes where the stakes are huge.

The two teams will also meet in April in what could end up deciding who wins the Premier League title.

Therefore, City must take inspiration from their very first triumph under Guardiola and ensure Arsenal’s trophy cabinet remains empty for yet another season.

Man City have some catching up to do in the Premier League

The League Cup final is anyone’s game, but Man City are already at a disadvantage in the Premier League, due to the five point gap separating them from Arsenal.

However, the Citizens have a game in hand, which means they are actually right on the heels of their title rivals.

Arsenal may feel in control of the league’s current proceedings, but If Guardiola’s side win all their remaining fixtures, the Premier League trophy is going to the Etihad.
