Troy Deeney makes big Manchester City claim about Nico O’Reilly during team of the week announcement

Troy Deeney has named his Premier League team of the week and he has some kind words to say about the Manchester City player he has chosen to include.

Manchester City did what was required on Saturday, but the match was anything but straightforward and only decided by a single goal.

Nico O’Reilly was the standout player for the hosts, as he scored with a powerful strike into the bottom left and later headed the ball into the opposite corner.

This has earned the midfielder a spot in Troy Deeney’s BBC Sport team of the week, along with a lot of praise.

Troy Deeney claims Nico O’Reilly improves Man City’s midfield

Ex-Watford striker Troy Deeney not only included O’Reilly in his team of the week, but has claimed he has been the player of the month in the Premier League.

Deeney has also said the 20-year-old makes his teammates look better and he has even suggested he should be included in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad in his current position.

Deeney said: “The player of the weekend for me, and the player of the month by a country mile.

“Since O’Reilly has moved into that midfield, Rodri has looked better, Manchester City have looked better, he has looked amazing and the job he has done for the past 18 months at left-back shows his versatility. What a player.

“Both his goals against Newcastle were great and totally different. He offers so much to Manchester City and is a shoo-in for the England squad. We were looking at him as a left-back but does he now play midfield?”

O’Reilly will face competition at England

Tuchel will be aware of O’Reilly’s form and he will definitely be keeping a close eye on the Man City starlet ahead of the World Cup.

However, England already have a healthy selection of midfielders at their disposal, including attacking minded players such as Jude Bellinngham and Morgan Rogers.

If O’Reilly is to be included in the squad, he will have to work hard to show he deserves to start ahead of the national team’s more established players.
