Manchester City could battle Liverpool for £52m rated defender

Manchester City are keeping tabs on a highly rated Serie A full-back, but they face competition from Liverpool and a European supergiant.

Manchester City have had some top class full-backs over the years, but some previously key players in this position have departed the club in recent times.

Joao Cancelo swapped City for the Saudi Pro League in 2024 and Kyle Walker moved to Burnley last summer after finishing up his loan move at AC Milan.

Also, Pep Guardiola has moved Nico O’Reilly back to midfield, leaving limited options in the full-back positions.

Man City are interested in Andrea Cambiaso

According to Caught Offside, Manchester City could look to Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso as a potential summer transfer target.

Guardiola values defenders who can invert into midfield and contribute to build-up play and Cambiaso’s intelligence and composure align with that tactical model.

The player’s adaptability, technical quality and tactical intelligence have elevated his standing, causing interest from City, as well as Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Cambiaso is a ‘modern system player’ who can operate on either flank and even possesses the ability to play as a midfielder.

It is said the 26-year-old is good in possession, disciplined and versatile, which are great attributes to have as a defensive minded player.

Juventus are not looking to sell Cambiaso

Signing Cambiaso will not be easy because he has already made 35 appearances for Juventus this season and the Serie A club have big plans for his future. The player is expected to be a long-term pillar of the squad and even a potential captain.

However, Juventus want to strengthen their attack with the possible signing of a marquee striker. Therefore, the club face a strategic dilema, even though Cambiaso is not actively for sale.

If Man City are to have any chance of signing him, an offer between £52m and £61m will be required, with Juve rejecting offers of just over £40m in January.

Despite this, if the club are able to build financial stability and compete in the Champions League, Cambiaso is likely to remain there and could even extend his stay beyond 2029.
