Manchester City look to take down Newcastle on 11-year anniversary of 5-0 thrashing

February 21 is a date with some good memories for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola will be looking to ensure this continues to be the case.

There are certain dates which are fondly remembered by football fans due to an unforgettable occurrence. For Manchester City supporters, May 13 will always be special as this was when the club won the Premier League with Sergio Aguero’s stoppage time winner against QPR.

Other dates are perhaps less memorable, but there have been so many occasions where City have picked up important victories.

Today of course is February 21 and on this day in 2017, Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Monaco 5-3 in the Champions League. However, what happened two years before is far more relevant ahead of tonight’s game against Newcastle.

Manchester City thrashed Newcastle exactly 11 years ago

On this day in 2015, Man City put Newcastle to the sword to secure a 5-0 victory as they ran riot at the Etihad Stadium.

The hosts made a quick start to the game, winning a penalty within the opening 30 seconds which was converted by Aguero. Sami Nasri and Edin Dzeko also landed on the scoresheet, giving their team a 3-0 lead at the break.

It did not take long for David Silva to make it four and just one minute later he scored again, as City gathered all three points in superb fashion.

Man City failed to win the Premier League after Newcastle win

Despite thumping Newcastle, Man City were unable to win the Premier League in 2014/15. They finished second, eight points behind Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

The club will be looking to avoid suffering the same fate this season and so beating Newcastle again is of great importance.

Arsenal have hit a rough patch and have dropped points over the last week or two, so now is the time for City to remain consistent and keep piling on the pressure.
