Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says the opportunity to continue to break records will keep his side from slowing down, despite having already won the Premier League title.
City face Swansea on Sunday, a week after being named Premier League champions for the third time, and the Spaniard at the helm is keen to continue to make history with the club.
The Cityzens have already broken records this season, namely the most conseuctive wins in English league history, and Pep wants to continue this streak.
However, Guardiola has historically struggled to continue with high level performances once he has won a league title early, something he will hope to move beyond this time around. On the matter, Guardiola said;
In the past when I won the league early, the next few games were not good.
But a good argument to keep going is the records.
The important thing is to win the title but maybe the records can help us be focused against the teams fighting to avoid relegation.
One record that the Cityzens could yet surpass is the record for most goals scored in a Premier League season, currently held by Chelsea ’09/’10 at 103 goals.
City have scored 93 times in the league this season, and with five games left to go, it’s one that the club should be aiming for.
City have earned plaudits this season for the way they play attacking, dominating football, and Guardiola admits he relishes the fact that fans enjoy his side’s style of play. He continued;
If the people enjoy watching us – especially our fans and people who love football – that’s the best.
I am happy with the way we try and play and winning the titles.
