During Monday’s FA Cup fixture between Man City and Wigan, chaos unfolded when referee Anthony Taylor swapped a yellow for a red card for a challenge on Max Power by Fabian Delph.
At half-time, a camera crew captured the managers of both sides having an animated argument. PepGuardiola appeared to be quite threatening toward the Wigan manager, Paul Cook, as he waved his arms at him and stalked him towards the changing rooms, clearly outraged.
In the midst of all this drama, Wigan went on to knock Manchester City out of the FA Cup with late goal by Will Grigg.
With a surprising victory under their belts, the Wigan fans invaded the pitch in wild celebrations, which sparked even more tension. Serigo Agüero was caught in an altercation with a Wigan fan as the Argentinian violently swung his arm at him after he claims the fan was abusive and spat on him.
Officers were targeted by the angry City fans who hurled objects such as advertising boards at them as they tried to calm fans and control the situation.
In his interview with BT Sport ahead of Man United’s Champions League tie against Sevilla,Jose Mourinho was quick to throw shade at his rival after these events, saying that his side lost to Bristol City earlier this year with class:
In the Capital One Cup, after winning last season, we lost in the quarter-final but we lost like Manchester United likes to lose – with dignity, with fair play, with participation in the happiness of a giant-killer.
City are being investigated by the FA, who are looking to issue a punishemet for the club’s failure to control their players. Mourinho rubbed salt in the wounds by insulting the club’s conduct, suggesting tat his team would never behave as City did;
Even in the Capital Cup we lost against a Championship team, I would say that as a Manchester United manager that way of behaving as a big team, even in defeat we were a big team.
