Jadon Sancho agreed deal at City before joining Dortmund

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola revealed that he shook hands with England international Jadon Sancho on a new deal, only for the player to change his mind and sign for Borussia Dortmund, as per the Mail Online.

Sancho was one of City’s hottest youth prospects and won player of the tournament at this summer’s European U17 Championship.

The England youth player was set to be part of City’s US tour before being brought into the first-team squad on a regular basis.

We offered him a huge deal and we shook hands.

But before we went to the States, he said ‘I am not going to sign’.

Sancho decided to stay in Manchester during the pre-season tour and stopped turning up to training when the squad arrived back in the UK.

In the last two or three weeks he didn’t appear in the training sessions. He should come but he didn’t.

We tried a lot. We met the father and his manager but if the player says ‘no, no, no, no, no’, what can we do?

Borussia Dortmund have given Sancho the number seven suggesting that he maybe a first-team regular going forward this season.

However, the player was not named in Dortmund’s Champions Leauge squad.

With all the investment into City’s academy and successful FA Youth Cup campaigns, this is an unwelcome turn of events.

However, Guardiola believes the move was not down to financial reasons.

matchday.
