Manchester City got their first three points of the season as they comfortably beat Premier League newcomers Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at the Amex Stadium.
The hosts were starting their first season in the top flight, and have made a number of signings from various leagues to bolster their squad for what will be a tough campaign.
Despite repeated failure to convert opportunities, City were quite comfortable in this game. Brighton never looked like they were threatening the Citizens, despite the odd counter-attack or corner.
The first half had very little action, but the second half showed more attacking intent. The deadlock was broken in the 70th minute after an individual error from Brighton midfielder Dale Stephens was pounced on by Kevin De Bruyne, who found David Silva, who in turn laid it off to Sergio Aguero to open his goal tally for the season.
Soon after, a dangerous cross from Fernandinho found the head of Brighton defender Lewis Dunk, who could only head it to his own net.
City’s defence performed very well with the addition of younger full-backs. What will worry Guardiola most is the irritating problem of converting chances, which will come back to haunt them if they play better sides in the league.
