Manchester City broke down a resolute Hull City defence with a trio of late goals at the KCOM Stadium on Monday evening, moving them to within seven points of league leaders Chelsea, who extended their winning run to a club-record 12 games with a win over Bournemouth earlier on Boxing Day.
After struggling to create any clear-cut opportunities in the opening hour and losing John Stones to injury after just 20 minutes of play, Raheem Sterling’s bursting run into the box won the Blues a penalty. Yaya Toure – back from the abyss – converted to give City the lead just as tension began to rise amongst fans.
Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho added a second just a few minutes later when Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva combined to create an unmissable chance. More trickery from Sterling then resulted in Hull defender Curtis Davis turning into his own net to wrap the game up as a late Christmas present for Pep Guardiola and City.
