Football is often referred to as a ‘funny old game’ for its ability to provide a series of inexplicable and improbable events. That ability surfaced in Manchester on Saturday afternoon. however, any humour surrounding it will be very much lost on Manchester City fans.
Everton stopper Maarten Stekelenburg produced a remarkable performance, saving a penalty in each half, before denying Kevin de Bruyne with an early contender for save of the season. The Dutchman’s heroics combined with a defensive unit that laid body and soul on the line enabled the Toffees to escape with an unlikely point.
City were by far the dominant force, but found chances at a premium and were unable to take those that fell their way. The Blues hemmed Everton in their own half for large spells of the game, but it was two penalties that presented the best opportunities for the hosts. Kevin de Bruyne saw his spot kick saved on the stroke of half-time, and then Aguero his midway through the second half after Romelu Lukaku had seemingly set up a classic smash and grab for the visitors.
City were able to take a share of the spoils with Nolito heading home from Silva’s cross, but a winner was nowhere to be found on an extremely frustrating afternoon for Guardiola’s side.
Here are four findings from Saturday’s match.
