Incoming manager Pep Guardiola will look to strengthen Manchester City’s midfield with the signing of Zent St Petersburg holding midfielder Axel Witsel.
Manchester Evening News reported rumours, sourcing Gazzetta dello Sport, that the Sky Blues had made initial enquiries into the availability of the wantaway Belgian.

Witsel stated last year that he wanted to play for ‘one of the top clubs in Europe’, sparking a transfer tussle between a number of teams.
City are understood to be one of five teams, including the likes of fellow Premier League outfit Tottenham and Guardiola’s current side Bayern Munich, looking into securing Witsel’s services this summer.
Although the 27-year-old is often used in a holding midfield role, Witsel has also shown his goalscoring ability in the Russian Premier League, scoring 14 goals in his four seasons at the club.

The Citizens have also been linked with moves for Toni Kroos and Paul Pogba in the recent days, but it is understood that Witsel is the only player that the club have made formal contact about.
