Manchester City have joined Liverpool and Chelsea in the race for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to the Express.
City are expected to sign a central defender in the summer because of Vincent Kompany’s recurring injury problems.
Martin Demichelis’ contract expires in the summer and his best years look to be behind him, while big money buys Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi have flattered to deceive.
That all points to City investing in another central defender. Both Everton’s John Stones and Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte have been heavily linked, but Pep Guardiola may opt for the more experienced Hummels.

It is understood that linking up with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool is the 28-year old’s first choice, with Guardiola and City following behind. Though Chelsea have been linked, a lack of European football next season will likely mean they are placed at the bottom of the pile.
Rumoured defensive target Laporte suffered a broken ankle on international duty with France and is expected to be out for eight weeks, potentially scuppering a transfer to City.
