Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has claimed the Blues need to prioritise securing themselves a Champions League place before they think about the title, report The Telegraph.
Aguero’s comments come ahead of the huge Manchester derby on Sunday, where City could do serious damage to Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United and their aspiration of getting a coveted Champions League spot.
With the likes of Leicester City and Spurs steaming ahead in the title race, the two Manchester club’s have struggled of late – especially Manuel Pellegrini’s side who have failed to impress away from home, with a mere 13 goals scored, and are yet to win back-to-back league games since October, these damning statistics are the very reason they find themselves in this top four predicament ahead of the weekend.
“We have to win, even more so because the title is slipping further and further away, and we have to make sure we take fourth place,” said Aguero.
“We want the title, but we have to take into account that United are right behind us and it will be a tough game, we will have to play intensely,” said the Argentine.
Aguero, who is the club’s top scorer with 16 Premier League goals, recently told media of his desire to return to his homeland in the twilight of his career but is hungry for more derby-day success come Sunday.
“Over the last five years City have always competed hard in the derby, but as you say at one point United were huge and City have invested a lot of money to bring in quality players, and that has leveled the playing field.
City face their Champions League fate tomorrow, at 11am, as they await the draw for the quarter-finals, where they will hope to affront one of the easier sides left in the competition.
