Thiago Alcantara says he won’t follow Guardiola to City
Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has played down talk of a summer move to Manchester City along with manager Pep Guardiola this summer, whilst speaking to Bild.
The Spaniard was linked with a move almost immediately following the announcement that Guardiola would take over at City this summer, but has joined Robert Lewandowski in playing down rumours that he’s on the verge of leaving the Allianz Arena.
Guardiola is a huge admirer of the midfielder and insisted on signing Thiago when he took the reins in Bavaria in the summer of 2013, but injuries have prevented the Spaniard, who got his break at Barcelona under Pep, from making the desired impact. He signed a new deal at the Allianz last summer but has since struggled to make many league starts this year.
However, it does look like the 24-year-old intends to carry on with his current deal rather than accept a move to the Premier League.
“There is no truth in the rumours saying I will follow [Guardiola],” Thiago said.
“I would not have signed a new contract had I wanted to leave the club. I extended my contract for a reason.”
Manchester City have been linked with a number of Bayern players but there have been reports that Guardiola will be unable to sign any players from the Bavarian giants because of an agreement in place.
