Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany remains confident of his team’s chances of winning the title, despite two straight defeats leaving his side six points behind leaders Leicester City, reports The Mirror.
The Belgian believes City’s past experiences as title-chasers, and ultimately winners means that the Blues are in good stead when facing the inexperienced likes of Leicester and Spurs – who have rarely been involved in a title fight in recent memory. City overturned an eight point deficit in the 2011/12 season to pip Manchester United to the title right at the death, even when everything had looked very much over.
The club’s mantras of “Together” and “fighting to the end” were a result of this amazing fightback and the clubs inability to give up.
Again, after a trophy-less season under Roberto Mancini, the Italian parted ways with the Blues and was replaced by Manuel Pellegrini. In his first season, City’s Houdini-like escapes from ominous positions showed itself to be present once again. This time, it was Liverpool and a huge 9 point advantage at one stage. Until Steven Gerrard comically slipped against Chelsea, they were the ones who looked most likely to be crowned winners in May. City, however, remained defiant and went on to win the majority of their remaining games – with Edin Dzeko scoring some vital goals in the final run-in. They’d done it again.
City’s skipper believes ruling out the Blues now is at your peril and insists that City are still in the hunt for the title.
No-one is allowed to give up on anything.
It’s a setback, but we wouldn’t know our personal history well if we didn’t expect to kick on from here.
After recently coming back from injury, the defender is eager to play a part in what would be City’s third Premier League title.
I look after everything now. I have got a certain amount of time left to play and want to make the most out of it. I don’t want to let anything slip.
City travel to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon where they face an in-form Chelsea fresh from a 5-1 mauling of Newcastle United. City are expected to field a youthful side as they are said to be focusing on their trip to Ukraine, where they play Dynamo Kiev, a few days later.
