Elite Development Squad (EDS) coach Simon Davies has explained the recent inclusion of promising Manchester City youngster Kelechi Iheanacho’s inclusion in their 3-1 win over Southampton under-21’s on Monday evening.
It was no surprise to see Iheanacho impress at youth level for City after his involvement for the first team this season, as the Nigerian forward played a key part in all three goals for his side as they saw off the struggling Southampton youth team.
It was Iheanacho’s first involvement in the EDS since May, due to his increased involvement in Manuel Pellegrini’s plans for the senior City side, playing 11 games already for the reigning champions and scoring three goals.

The manager really wants to make sure that when they get an option to get some minutes under the belt it’s good to do so, so that when they get the chance to keep that shirt in the first team they’re prepared.
Davies also expressed his delight at how Iheanacho performed for the EDS, describing his display for the young guns as “fantastic”.
Kelechi was fantastic. He didn’t get his goal unfortunately, but it will be good for everybody if he keeps getting them for the first team. He worked really, really hard and that’s going to be only good for himself and the club.
Iheanacho’s excellent performances for City this season have earned him his first cap for the Nigeria senior team and the 19-year-old will be looking to push on from this impressive start.
