Manchester City midfield anchor Yaya Toure has told French newspaper L’Equipe that he feels that he has been given unfair criticism by the media in England and his home country Ivory Coast.
Although Toure has ‘won titles’ and ‘lots of money’, the Ivorian insists that he is ‘not happy’ with the press coverage that he was given for his performances throughout last season.
His opinions were expressed to the French tabloid when rumours surfaced about his future at the club. Toure responded to these comments by saying:
Journalists have spoken about a new departure for me, but what new departure? I have just come out of a season with City where we finished second in the English league, which is the hardest in the world.
The ex-Barcelona man was forced to deal with the death of his brother, Ibrahim, and fatigue from participating in the World Cup last summer and African Cup of Nations halfway through the season, but still managed to net 13 goals in all competitions for the Citizens. The season prior to that, the City midfielder impressed spectators around the globe and he has expressed his anger at people not remembering that.
I scored 26 goals, 20 in the Premier League, and nobody mentioned it. You understand a bit my disgust. Here, when it is bad, they stress it; when it’s good, they leave that in the dungeon. They have always used their little methods to annoy and alienate me.
Toure has recently been named on the shortlist for African Player of the Year – an award that he has dominated for the past four years.
