Manchester City have finally listened to the voice of the fans and are interested in moving for Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, according to Daily Mail’s Simon Jones.
Supporters called for a new defender to be signed after numerous frailties at the back were recognised by pre-season opponents. A 4-1 thrashing at the hands of ten-time European champions Real Madrid and a shock 4-2 defeat to Stuttgart left fans disappointed with the preparation ahead of the new season and pundits predicting a tough season at the Etihad.
La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid are reportedly holding out for £28m before they will allow Godin to make the move to north-west England, but the player is supposedly keen on a move to the dethroned Premier League champions.
Young Belgian defender Jason Denayer has impressed in pre-season after winning the SPL Young Player of the Season whilst on loan at Celtic and was hoping to break into the first-team squad this season. However, Manuel Pellegrini may decide to loan out the prodigy, who won his first senior cap for the Belgium national team earlier this year.
Fans will also be hoping that their defensive problems are solved before they meet Chelsea at the Etihad on the second weekend of the season – a match that could crucial on deciding where the Premier League trophy is lifted next May.
