UPDATE: Goal are reporting that the Blues are on the verge of making Delph their first signing of the summer, paying his £8m release clause. Meanwhile ESPN run with the story that Delph is keen on a move to City because he believes experience in the Champions League will aid him in his bid to make the Euro 2016 squad. The Mail echo previous reports, suggesting that City are indeed making moves to try and land Delph.
The Telegraph’s John Percy reported a few days back that Manchester City remain Fabian Delph’s most likely destination if he departs Villa Park this summer, with The Blues being heavily linked with an £8 million move for the England international as they look to boost their homegrown quota going into the 2015-16 season.
Links to Delph emerged in the press fairly suddenly, with the papers quoting a price of £10 million, which was his release clause. However, it was then revealed that this was just £8 million for City, making a move seem even more enticing. However, rumours have been met with a mixed reaction from Blues.
With players like Paul Pogba and Raheem Sterling being heavily linked with a move to Eastlands in the upcoming transfer window, it needs to be accepted that not every player City are linked with will be a marquee target. On the face of it, Delph looks a needless purchase, but the fact of the matter is, he’s homegrown, not old and a cheap option as opposed to someone equally as good who could cost £10 million more. As long as players like Sterling are being brought in as well, there shouldn’t be discontent about signing the Villa man.
