Marseille have announced a deal in principle to sign Karim Rekik on a permanent deal from Manchester City. This comes after constant speculation over the past few weeks that he could be on his way out of Eastlands this summer, after two successful seasons with PSV Eindhoven.
PSV were thought to be one of the clubs interested in signing Rekik this summer, although the Dutchman was keen to have a step up from the Eredivisie after spending two consecutive seasons on loan there from City. There were also rumours of late interest from Atletico Madrid, which never seemed to amount to anything. Nevertheless, Rekik has seemingly chosen Marseille and will be confirmed a Marseille player in the coming days.
At this stage, the Ligue 1 side have only confirmed a deal in principle, and the defender still needs to complete a medical before he can make the move to France, but this is almost certainly just a formality. If he’s at that stage, he’s also more than likely agreed everything in the deal, and will sign the deal when he gets the all clear on his medical.
No fee has been confirmed by Marseille, but reports in the press have said its £3.5 million, which isn’t bad for a player deemed surplus to requirements and only played once senior league game for The Blues. Regardless, he’ll be seen by many as one of the ones that got away from City’s fledgling youth system.
