Jason Denayer could be set to extend his contract with Manchester City past 2016, with his agent Jesse De Preter confirming to Foot Mercato that they’re already in negotiations with The Blues to keep the Belgian plying his trade in Manchester, amid rumours he could be given a place in the senior squad next season.
Denayer is coming off the back of a hugely successful loan spell in Scotland with Celtic, a loan which saw him named as PFA Young Player of the Year for his accomplishments in Glasgow. This led to rumours Manuel Pellegrini was ready to give him his first team chance next season, as well as links to another loan spell, with Lyon being one of the teams mentioned as possible suitors.
Despite his success in Scotland and high potential, Denayer’s City contract expires in a little over 12 months, and The Blues are reportedly keen to keep him at Eastlands instead of letting him depart, eager to tap his potential. Speaking to Foot Mercato, his agent said “we have been contacted by several clubs, including Lyon.”
“Last season, we thought it was very important for Jason to have experience in a first team. So we organized his loan at Glasgow Celtic. It worked very well because he has started very well. He was immediately at the level that was expected of him from the first day and it was kept until the last. He was voted best young player of the year in Scotland. His loan was a success.”
“Meanwhile, Manchester City has expressed its wish to extend the contract of Jason. The end of his current contract is 30th June 2016. The management of Manchester City said they believe Jason is a potential player for next season for the first team. We are in the midst of negotiations for an extension.”
De Preter also said if the contract suits Denayer’s terms then he’s likely to re-sign with The Blues, and it seems sensible for City to give Denayer these terms. A new deal would likely mean he plays a part in the senior squad for the new season, news which will be music to the ears of many Blues.
