City linked with Slovakian

Manchester City and Real Madrid might be set to engage in a battle to sign Napoli’s Marek Hamsik, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that both Manuel Pellegrini and Rafa Benitez want to bring the Slovakian attacking midfielder to their respective clubs this summer.

The article from the Spanish paper focusses more on the interest from new Real manager Rafa Benitez, who reportedly sees the midfielder as the perfect complement to Toni Kroos, who signed last summer.

However, City are being linked with a long string of names at the moment, with The Blues expected to revamp their squad this summer. They were previously linked with a move for Real’s Isco, as a potential replacement for David Silva.

Hamsik first came to the attention of most City fans during the 2011-12 season, when he visited Manchester with Napoli in the Champions League. He, along with Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi – both of whom went on to be heavily linked with moves to City, before ending up at Paris Saint-Germain – terrorised City in the games that season, but since hasn’t been linked with them as much. At 27, some City fans might want us to be looking at younger age groups, but would accept the Slovakian nonetheless.

Having worked with Benitez at Napoli, Real could be said to have an advantage in signing the Slovakia international, but The Blues will still retain some confidence that they can sign him – if their interest is genuine, of course.
