Reports are circulating from AS that Andrea Pirlo has accepted a move to New York City following the expiry of his Juventus contract in the coming summer window. He is likely to become the club’s third Designated Player if reports are true and he’s set to be announced as the latest New York City signing.
The Italian legend had been linked with moves to the Premier League over the past couple of summers, but remained with Juventus and has had an incredibly successful final few years in his home country, which culminates in a Champions League final against Barcelona this weekend.
However, with Pirlo now 36 and almost certainly leaving Juventus in the summer, it’s likely that he’d be looking for a move to the MLS, where many older players are now finishing their careers. Should he sign for New York City, he’d join David Villa and Frank Lampard – both legends in their own right – in the Bronx, helping a side who’ve struggled for form this season.
AS believe that the midfielder accepted a proposal to join the side after a talk with club CEO Ferran Soriano, after they failed in a pursuit for Barcelona midfielder Xavi, who was also reported to have agreed a move to New York at one point, but is now set to join Al Saad in Qatar after bowing out of the Spanish side this summer.
Pirlo’s experience – coupled with that of Lampard and Villa – could do wonders for a struggling Jason Kreis team, who currently lie bottom of the Eastern Conference with one win in 13 games.
