Manchester City’s friendly against Houston Dyanmo has been cancelled just a couple of hours before the game was due to be played, with the officials deeming the pitch at the BBVA Compass Stadium to not be up to their standards, following heavy rain and floods in Texas during the days leading up to the charity game between the Premier League and MLS sides.
There was initial speculation that the friendly would be called off after 11 people lost their lives to the severe weather in Texas and Oklahoma this week, with ten inches of rain in six hours making roads in Houston inaccessible and leaving many in the Lone Star State without electricity.
City were due to visit the BBVA Compass Stadium on Thursday night, in the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup, although given the weather the pitch was left in too poor a condition for the match to be playable. Many will be hoping that the game can be re-arranged, not only so Houston fans can see the game they were promised but also to raise more money for charity, seeing as all the proceeds from Thursday’s friendly would have gone to charity.
With the second and final game of their North American tour being cancelled, Manchester City are likely to make the trip to New York as soon as possible, with a visit to Yankee Stadium and New York City FC on the cards for Saturday – interestingly, Houston are also the opponents in that game.
If no other friendlies are planned, then we may not see City again for nearly two months, not until the game against Roma in Australia in the International Champions Cup in July. Perhaps we will see more games before then, but if we don’t then hopefully we’ll be seeing some new signings play a part in that game.
