Onyewu training with NYCFC

New York City may be about to sign Oguchi Onyewu after he was pictured in training with The Blues, at the start of a two-week trial with the Bronx-based club. The American defender was released by Charlton Athletic earlier this month, and may have been offered a route back into his home country for the first professional spell at a club in the States in his entire career; his last club in America was Clemson Tigers, a college team who he left in 2001.

Onyewu’s recent years have been blighted by injury, to the extent he didn’t play a single league game for AC Milan in three years in Serie A, and hasn’t played more than 20 league games for any team since he left Standard Liege in 2009. This season, he only made three league appearances for Charlton after he joined for free following his release by Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

With being offered a two-week trial with The Blues, Jason Kreis will be hoping to assess Onyewu’s fitness and ability, with the former Real Salt Lake manager looking to inject some talent into a side which has struggled for wins and points so far in their spell as an MLS team.
