UEFA have confirmed that City’s previous FFP sanctions will carry over this summer, providing that the club meet the terms of last year’s agreement.
City’s struggles with the introduction of Financial Fair Play over the last few years culminated in a £49m fine and transfer cap from UEFA last summer.
The Blues failed to bring in any sort of elite player to strengthen their squad, with many City fans identifying that as a primary factor as to why their title defence faltered so easily in the end.
City’s £25 million signing of Wilfried Bony in January was given the go-ahead by UEFA, possibly hinting that matters would become much easier this time around.
Alvaro Negredo’s loan move to Valencia came with a forced £24m permanent move and City are likely to recoup more money with player sales – the likes of Toure, Nasri, Jovetic and Milner have all been touted as possible departures.
The club had been confident of overcoming the barrier of FFP for sometime, The Times journalist James Ducker told us exactly that in our exclusive interview a while back.
Now, as per journalist Gabriele Marcotti, the club will adhere to FFP regulations as long as they account a maximum of €20 million euros in break-even losses.
Still, UEFA need to monitor and ensure that their FFP calculation links directly to the figures from the club. But if all goes well, City are set to splash the cash and give the squad the overhaul it needs. With links to names such as Paul Pogba, Roberto Firmino, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne, and now this news – an exciting summer could be on the cards for the Blues.
