Spanish newspaper AS believe City could be set to make a big move for Juventus’ Alvaro Morata in the summer after he hit form in Turin alongside former City man Carlos Tevez. The Spanish publication also believes The Blues could offload both Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic to make the deal happen.
The former Real Madrid striker only made the move to Serie A last summer after deciding to move on from the Spanish capital, but has found form in a strong Juventus side, which has led to talk he could soon be making tracks once again – and probably for significantly more than the £15.8 million fee Juve paid for the striker last July.
Of course, one of the clubs he could sign for may well be Real Madrid, even if they did let him leave. They have a clause in the deal that means they can re-sign Morata for £21 million, yet AS report City are hopeful the Champions League holders won’t take up that option, so The Blues can sign him and bring him to England.
Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko could both need to leave to make room for the Spaniard, and they have both been linked with moves regularly in recent weeks, with the Bosnian even being linked with a move to Barcelona once their transfer ban expires.
The fact City only just signed a striker in January in the form of Wilfried Bony may suggest that there is little substance to the Morata rumours, for that would mean one of the two has to cut down their playing time. Morata has made 22 league appearances for the Italian side this season, and he probably wouldn’t want to give that up; equally, Bony didn’t sign to sit on the bench.
AS believe that for City to make a move for Alvaro Morata, they would need to cough up a fee of £32.8 million to bring the 22-year-old to the Premier League, and whilst that may eventually prove to be good value many would feel the money would be better spent elsewhere, on defenders or midfielders.
