Former Manchester City striker Rodney Marsh has hit out at his former club, talking down some of the players in the squad as well as predicting Manuel Pellegrini to be sacked if he does not save grace this season, in an interview with the Daily Mirror. This comes after a relatively poor season for The Blues, which has seen several of the major squad players draw criticism, as well as the manager.
However, instead of just replacing a couple of players in positions in the team, Marsh suggested that needed change is much more widespread than that, saying “I think in fact that City have to rebuild the team, not only in a couple of positions, but across the whole team.”
The former striker singled out certain players who haven’t been good enough, including Mangala, Nasri and – surprisingly – Sergio Aguero.
“I think Mangala has been a terrible signing. He’s shown nothing so far.”
“Fernandinho and Fernando, for me, are not top quality Premier League players.”
“Aguero is having a very ordinary time, Jovetic will soon be off, Nasri and Navas too, all for me, by their standards, have had very poor seasons.”
However, Marsh also decided to talk about the manager Pellegrini, who has drawn a lot of criticism in recent weeks for tactical stubbornness and weak exits from competitions, which has led to several names, such as Carlo Ancelotti, being linked with the City job from the summer onwards.
Talking in his interview, the former City player said of the Chilean boss “I can see a new manager, particularly if they drop out of the top two. Obviously they got stuffed in the Champions League, and Pellegrini looks to me as though he’s stitching the team together with Band-Aids all over the field. I can see Pellegrini being sacked in the summer.”
Rodney Marsh has been fairly out-spoken in recent times, but it is surprising he feels such change is needed at a team that does still sit second in the table. However, he may be right to an extent – some change is needed, and it will be made this summer.
