Manchester City have reportedly entered the race for Memphis Depay after sending scouts to watch the PSV Eindhoven star in their game against Feyenood in the Eredivisie at the weekend. If reports from the Daily Star are true, The Blues become one of several clubs supposedly interested in bringing the Holland international to the Premier League – that lists also includes cross-city rivals United.
Depay has become a huge part of a PSV Eindhoven side that also includes Karim Rekik despite being just 21, and has already scored 20 goals this season, despite traditionally being a winger. This has led to links to many of the biggest clubs in Europe, with the most regular link being to United, where Depay’s former national team manager is now in charge, and who are prepared to spend big to become a title-challenging team once again.
However, The Red Devils are not alone in their chase. Arsenal and Spurs have also been linked with a move for the Dutch international, as have Paris Saint-Germain in France. Now, it seems City can be added to that list having sent a three man delegation to watch not only Depay but also Jetro Willems and City loanee Karim Rekik.
The Star believe it would take a fee of around £18 million to win the services of Depay from PSV. The Eredivisie club also have bargaining power because they know if they try and hold out for more money, there are enough clubs interested in the youngster for them to almost certainly be assured of a higher fee. Given the concept of ‘paying for potential’, spending £18m on a young player who potentially has an extremely bright future could be superb business.
Since making his debut for PSV Eindhoven in 2011 aged 17, Depay has gone on to play 90 games for the Eredivisie side in all competitions, scoring 38 goals in that time. He’s also played 13 times for the Dutch national team, scoring twice.
