New York City boss Jason Kreis has come out in the press to rubbish speculation about whether Frank Lampard could join the new Major League Soccer club early, having struggled for playing time in recent weeks under Manuel Pellegrini.
With any hope of a final Premier League title in his career quickly dissipating, there had been rumours Lampard could ask to begin his career on the other side of the Atlantic early, with his loan spell due to end in the summer anyway. However, Kreis has marked this down as nothing more than a rumour.
When asked about the possibility of the midfielder arriving early from Manchester, Kreis said “no, it’s certainly not something that’s being discussed.”
The American coach continued, saying the plan was to carry on as normal: “we’re approaching this in the exact same way that we have since in January when we found out for sure that he was staying until the summer, and we need to prepare ourselves and be ready for him to join us in the summer.”
“We’re still very excited about that prospect, but we’re not going to speculate on anything happening sooner than that.”
However, even though the former Chelsea midfielder may not be appearing in the MLS for some weeks, Jason Kreis is still keen for his future player to start building bridges early, saying “I have not yet spoken to him, but obviously we’ll get to spend some time together and it’s really exciting.”
The former Real Salt Lake boss also hopes Lampard can make the trip to the Big Apple during the current international break, saying “he’s going to take the time and make the effort to come over and see us this weekend when he has a break and I look forward to spending some time with him and also getting him around the guys some more. I think that’s important.”
However, it can be questioned just how needed Lampard is so far. Kreis’ New York City career has got off to a good start, with them drawing their first two away games at Orlando City and Colorado Rapids, as well as winning their first home game, at home to New England Revolution.
