According to Spanish football expert Graham Hunter, the City players believe The Blues are on the verge of making a huge move for Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, as they look to bring in a superstar after several transfers of mediocrity.
The Blues are looking to revamp the squad after a poor season, and Hunter told Revista De La Liga that some of the City squad believe a mega-money move for the former Manchester United man could be on the cards.
Talking on the Sky Sports programme, Hunter said “I know that the players at Manchester City were talking very, very firmly that they believed there was a successful move coming from that club over the last couple of weeks.”
“Whether that makes it true or not, I wouldn’t like to say.”
However, Graham Hunter also admitted that even if City did agree a fee with Real Madrid, whether the move happened would come down to the 30-year-old Portugal international, saying “when you are No 1 in the world, he will decide.”
“I don’t think he has decided to leave yet.”
For City to sign Ronaldo, they would almost certainly need to think about how it affects them financially. He would command a fee that would without a doubt be a club-record fee, and would probably be in the upper echelons of the list of the biggest fees ever – the Express are reporting Real would accept £65 million, almost £30 million more than the fee paid for Sergio Aguero in 2011. On top of that, The Blues would likely need to match his current wages (if not increase them) of £240,000 per week. All that, for a player who turned 30 last month, leads to one question: would it be worth it? Probably.
