The second link to an English midfielder has come in a matter of days, with The Mail believing City could be interested in bringing Jordan Henderson to Eastlands in the summer, again with the aim of expanding their list of homegrown and young players – as was the case with the link to Jack Wilshere on Sunday, who is also believed to be on City’s shopping list.
City need to start thinking more and more about the homegrown players they have, with many such as Scott Sinclair linked with moves away from the club as City aim to balance the books and make sure they don’t violate UEFA Financial Fair Play rules again. However, they still need to make sure they bring in genuine talent and not just filler players to fit the homegrown quota.
It is believed the hierarchy at City have been impressed by the leadership skills Henderson has shown in the intermittent absences of Steven Gerrard this season. The former Sunderland midfielder has even been earmarked as a possible replacement for Gerrard when he departs for LA Galaxy in the summer, ending a lengthy spell at Anfield.
If that is indeed the plan that Brendan Rodgers and his staff have for Jordan Henderson, it will take a lot to prise him away from Liverpool, with a hefty fee almost certainly required after he’s been much-improved on his early beginnings at Anfield. However, there have been reports of uncertainty surrounding his contract in recent times, and that could encourage The Blues to make a move.
Since he made the move to Anfield from Sunderland in June of 2011, Henderson has gone on to play 176 times in all competitions, scoring 19 goals in the process.
