With City needing to bring in some young talent very soon, it looked like a move for Brazilian wonderkid Gerson could be on the cards, with some of Europe’s top clubs also chasing the 17-year-old Fluminese man. However, talkSPORT are reporting City could be facing more competition for the youngster, with Juventus being linked with a move for the midfielder in the summer.
Gerson may only be 17, but he’s already managed to get a place in the Fluminese team and went to the South American Youth Football Championship with Brazil earlier this year, and although their under-20 side came 4th in the competition Gerson played a part in all but one of their 9 games, starting 6 of those.
His successes at such an early stage of his career have led to him being linked with a number of top clubs, and rumours that his father has already held talks with Juventus in Turin and Barcelona in Catalonia – with Neymar working to sell the appeal of Barcelona to the father of one of Brazil’s future talents.
Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the Brazilian in recent times, but it looks like City and Chelsea could both be at a disadvantage given Gerson’s father, Marcos Antonio da Silva’s comments to press: “the project of Juve is good, but Barcelona would be crazy.”
If City could persuade Gerson to choose Beswick over Barcelona then it looks like he could have an extremely bright future ahead of him in blue, but it could be a tough ask for City to try and bring him to the north-west given not only the appeal of Barcelona as a city, but the track record of Brazilians at Barcelona – Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Romário to name just a few – could turn the tide in the La Liga side’s favour.
