City could be set to face off against United in a tussle to sign Dani Alves from Barcelona, according to reports from talkSPORT. The right-back’s contract expires at the end of June, and both Manchester sides could be looking at bringing him in on a free from La Liga.
Both teams have been linked with the 31-year-old for some time through various media, with the first links to City coming weeks after Barcelona knocked The Blues out of the Champions League last season – and, interestingly, after Alves ‘revealed’ he’d never heard of City before 2009. Which doesn’t seem easy.
United were linked with the Brazilian last year also, but nothing came of that link, until they resurfaced in the latest reports.
Alves’ age, and the fact City already have two competent right-backs in Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna suggest that this report from talkSPORT may not be entirely true, but you might think that City could try to use the fixtures against Barcelona in the coming weeks as a way to contact Alves’ representatives, if a deal were to be brokered.
Alves has played over 200 games in La Liga for Barcelona since he signed for them in 2008.
