City are thought to be one of two clubs looking at £26 million-rated Mario Mandzukic with just a few days left of the January transfer window, according to the Express. Arsenal are also thought to be interested in him, if they are willing to match any bid City make for the Croatian striker.
The 28-year-old only signed for Atletico Madrid back in the summer after a successful couple of years with Bayern Munich, but there are now rumours that he could be on his way out of the Vicente Calderon after the re-signing and subsequent resurgence of Fernando Torres pushed him out of the team, where he’d been playing a fair amount in the early part of the season.
Arsenal were linked with a move for the former Wolfsburg player back in the summer before he joined Atletico, but were unsuccessful in their bid to sign him, with the striker eventually opting to head for La Liga instead. Now, they could be back in for him, but only for a reasonable price, believe the Express.
The signing of Mandzukic, while unlikely, would almost certainly spell the end for the City career of either Edin Dzeko or Stevan Jovetic, both of whom have been linked with moves away from the club in the summer. With the recent signing of Wilfried Bony, and the irreplaceable status deservedly held by Sergio Aguero, it is most likely to be one of Dzeko or Jovetic who makes way for a new striker.
Mandzukic has scored 8 goals in 16 league appearances since signing for Atletico in July, and before that had scored 33 in 54 in two years at Bayern Munich.
