Manchester City are one of a number of clubs monitoring the situation of Burnley striker Danny Ings, whose contract with the newly-promoted side expires in the summer.
City are thought to be interested along with Spurs and Chelsea, with City and Chelsea both looking to increase their quota of homegrown, young players. Burnley’s top scorer, with 7 goals, could be the perfect man to fit this bill.
Spurs are thought to be the most keen on the former Bournemouth man, and want to try and tie up a deal for him before the transfer deadline next Monday, aware they could easily be outgunned if City and Chelsea decide to enter the race to sign the 22-year-old.
Of course, the transfer could all be made a lot easier in the summer if Ings doesn’t sign a new deal, meaning he is free to find a new club. Burnley would have to be paid £3 million in training compensation, and this is likely to be less than clubs would have to pay to sign the striker in this window.
Questions have to be asked about just how much Ings is likely to play at City. Of course, there have been rumours linking Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic with moves away from the club this January/in the summer, but the recent addition of Wilfried Bony further limits the playing time Ings could get. If a deal for him were to be brokered to bring him to Manchester, it would almost certainly have to come after one or more strikers departed – and even then, he might not be top of the shopping list.
Ings has 34 league goals in 106 games since he joined The Clarets from Bournemouth in 2011.
