Doubts over the future of Yaya Toure have once again resurfaced after he was quoted in an interview as saying he doesn’t know where he’ll be playing next year after a tough year at the club.
Speaking with CNN whilst on international duty with the Ivory Coast, Yaya was asked about the difficulty of choosing between club and country as well as the debacle in the summer that led to weeks of speculation saying he was on the brink of leaving the club.
His answer of “we’ll see” when asked if he wanted to stay at City could cause some of these rumours to reappear on the back pages, especially after the year that he had.
When asked who let him down the most during all that went on during the summer transfer window, he responded he wanted to “keep it to myself” but that the people who were responsible “will know that because I will always tell them”. To some, this may suggest it was someone in the club, and he has too much loyalty to insult them to the press.
He also spoke out about how he didn’t want to “open my heart again to the newspapers” after what was a difficult summer in which his brother Ibrahim died of cancer aged just 28, alongside all the rumours he wanted to leave City due to unhappiness.
Whilst these quotes certainly aren’t easy reading for most City fans, hopefully there is something that can be done to sway Yaya’s opinion. He showed in the interview that he admires the City support, but maybe the club still have some work to do in order to make him want to stay.
