City had two players in England’s starting XI as Thomas Tuchel’s side rounded off their latest Nations League fixtures with a 3-0 victory over Czechia at Wembley.
Elliot Anderson and Marc Guehi both started and played 63 minutes before being replaced together, while late call-up Rico Lewis remained among the substitutes.
For Man City, the evening provided another useful international outing for two players who have become part of Tuchel’s plans, with Anderson particularly prominent in England’s midfield.
Harry Kane took the wider headlines by scoring twice on his record-equalling 125th appearance, after Vladimir Coufal’s own goal had put England ahead.
Anderson and Guehi start together for England
Anderson lined up in midfield alongside Jude Bellingham and Myles Lewis-Skelly, and was involved in some of England’s better attacking work before the break.
The City midfielder played an excellent ball over the Czech defence to release Morgan Rogers in the move that produced Kane’s first goal. Rogers supplied the cross, and therefore the assist, but Anderson’s pass was the moment that initially opened up the visitors.
It was another encouraging contribution from a player who has increasingly looked comfortable at senior international level.
Guehi, meanwhile, started at centre-back alongside Jarell Quansah and helped England comfortably contain Czechia. The visitors failed to register a shot on target across the 90 minutes, leaving Jordan Pickford with a relatively quiet evening as England recorded another clean sheet.
Anderson and Guehi were both withdrawn in the 63rd minute with England already three goals ahead. There was an Everton connection to the double change, with James Garner replacing Anderson and Jarrad Branthwaite coming on for Guehi.
Lewis was also part of Tuchel’s squad after being promoted from the England Under-21 set-up following Nico O’Reilly’s withdrawal. The City academy graduate remained unused at Wembley, but his late elevation gave City another representative within the senior group.
City confirmed Lewis’s promotion to the senior squad ahead of the Czechia game.
For Enzo Maresca, the most important outcome was that Anderson and Guehi both came through their final international assignment without any apparent problems.
They can now return to the City Football Academy with their England work completed and attention turning back towards the Premier League.
