Man City v Arsenal: How to watch huge Women’s Super League clash at the Etihad

City can strengthen their early grip on the Women’s Super League when Arsenal visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Andrée Jeglertz’s reigning champions have made a perfect start to their title defence, winning all four league matches to sit top with 12 points. Arsenal arrive seventh on five points after three WSL games without a win.

Victory would therefore leave City 10 points ahead of Arsenal after only five matches, although Tottenham and Chelsea currently sit between the two sides in the table.

Sunday’s game will be City’s first Women’s Super League fixture at the Etihad this season.

City protecting perfect WSL start

City have beaten Birmingham City, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Charlton Athletic in their opening four league matches, with last weekend’s 1-0 victory at The Valley maintaining the only 100 per cent record in the WSL.

Their unbeaten run in all competitions stretches back to February’s 1-0 defeat away to Arsenal. City also go into Sunday’s game having drawn 1-1 with Real Madrid in the Women’s Champions League on Thursday, when Bunny Shaw’s second-half goal earned a point.

Kerstin Casparij believes City can take positives from that European performance into another demanding fixture, while Jeglertz has highlighted Arsenal’s midfield as one of the areas his side will need to contain.

“Their central midfield is the engine of their team,” the City manager said. “There are a lot of different threats in that team so we can’t just focus on one or two things.”

Arsenal have had a more difficult start, winning one, drawing two and losing one of their opening four league games.

City won the corresponding home fixture 3-2 at the Joie Stadium last season, when Iman Beney struck late to settle a five-goal contest. Arsenal won the reverse fixture 1-0 at the Emirates in February — City’s most recent defeat in any competition.

Another City victory on Sunday would make it five league wins from five and leave one of last season’s title rivals 10 points behind before the international break.
