City could ultimately face expulsion from the Premier League and even find themselves without an immediate place in the EFL, according to a striking new claim about the possible consequences of their financial case.
Journalist Duncan Castles has outlined a series of potential outcomes if City’s conflict with the Premier League continues to escalate. His claims, reported by GiveMeSport, go considerably further than much of the discussion around points deductions or relegation, although no sanction has yet been imposed.
EFL claim raises another Man City question
Castles claims City could eventually face expulsion from the Premier League, with the EFL then potentially refusing to admit the club into one of its divisions.
That would be very different from conventional relegation. Sky Sports has explained that if City were expelled rather than relegated through a points deduction, they would have to apply for admission to the EFL, with its 72 clubs deciding whether to accept them.
Castles also suggests the consequences could extend to City’s owners, directors and executives. These are potential outcomes raised by the journalist rather than punishments announced or proposed by the Premier League or EFL.
For now, the confirmed process is considerably narrower. Man City have formally appealed the independent commission’s findings, with the club describing the decision as containing “clear material errors” of law, principle and fact and maintaining their innocence.
Expulsion is among the sanctions available under Premier League rules, alongside measures including a points deduction, suspension, compensation and restrictions on player registrations. However, what punishment City will actually face has not yet been decided.
Until the appeal and sanctions processes are resolved, expulsion, EFL exclusion and action against club executives remain possible scenarios being discussed rather than confirmed outcomes.
