Bayern Munich 2-2 Man City: Wamser snatches historic comeback draw

City came from two goals down to draw 2-2 away to Bayern Munich on their return to the Women’s Champions League.

Giulia Gwinn opened the scoring after 11 minutes before a Kerstin Casparij own goal put Bayern 2-0 ahead in the 28th minute. Beth Mead got one back just before half-time, and Carlotta Wamser equalised four minutes from the end, after Khadija Shaw had missed a penalty. City also became the first English side to avoid defeat away to Bayern in European competition.

Mead and Wamser score first City goals

Bayern were comfortably the better side early on and took the lead when Linda Dallmann released Gwinn down the right, with the Germany international finishing beyond Ayaka Yamashita.

The second arrived 17 minutes later. Pernille Harder sent a cross into the area and Casparij, trying to deal with the danger, diverted it beyond her own goalkeeper.

City were in trouble at that stage, and Bayern had chances to add a third, but Mead’s goal just before the break changed the feel of the game. Casparij was involved again, this time at the other end, breaking down the right before Mead eventually converted from close range.

It was her first goal for City and gave Andree Jeglertz’s side something to work with after a difficult first half. The chance to make it 2-2 arrived in the 62nd minute when Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic fouled Aoba Fujino. Shaw stepped up, only for Mahmutovic to save her penalty.

Bayern remained ahead until the 86th minute. Laura Blindkilde Brown found Wamser in space, and the German beat Mahmutovic at her near post for her first City goal. Having been 2-0 down and then missed a penalty, City had their point.

It was another late recovery after Friday’s 4-2 win over Liverpool, when two stoppage-time goals settled the game. City have been in excellent form in recent weeks, although Bayern gave them considerably more trouble than most during the opening half-hour.

A draw in Munich also gives City another entry on the club’s list of European comebacks, albeit one that earned a point rather than a victory.

They are back in Women’s Champions League action against Real Madrid next week. The full match details can be found in the Sky Sports report.
