Man City 2-4 PSG: Haaland double not enough after first-half collapse

City suffered their first defeat under Enzo Maresca as Paris Saint-Germain won 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League.

Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha put the holders 3-0 ahead before half-time, with City unable to cope with PSG’s movement and intensity. Erling Haaland scored twice after the break, but Maghnes Akliouche added PSG’s fourth as Luis Enrique’s side held off City’s attempted comeback.

PSG take control at the Etihad

City made a promising start but were behind after 13 minutes when Doue finished from the edge of the penalty area. Dembele doubled PSG’s lead 99 seconds later before Vitinha made it 3-0 after 32 minutes. Maresca responded with three changes at half-time, introducing Matheus Nunes, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye.

City improved immediately. Enzo Fernandez headed wide before Ndiaye crossed for Haaland to score after 53 minutes.Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal advantage nine minutes later after Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to deal with his initial effort. City continued to create chances. Josko Gvardiol had a header cleared off the line, and Fernandez hit the woodwork before Haaland scored his second from Bouaddi’s cross after 75 minutes.

Haaland also struck the woodwork and was denied a hat-trick by Matvey Safonov as City pushed for a third. At the other end, Donnarumma saved a late penalty from former City forward Ferran Torres.

Haaland’s double took him to 38 goals in 41 Champions League appearances for City, moving him clear of Sergio Aguero as the club’s leading scorer in the competition.

City had 27 attempts but the damage from PSG’s three-goal first half proved decisive. The defeat leaves Maresca’s side on three points from their opening two Champions League games following their 2-0 victory at Porto.

City return to Premier League action against Ipswich Town at the Etihad on Saturday.
