Haaland completes remarkable Premier League set for Man City

Erling Haaland completed another remarkable goal-scoring set as Man City beat Sunderland 5-3 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Norwegian scored City’s fifth goal in the 81st minute, turning home Josko Gvardiol’s low cross after the effort was initially ruled out for offside. VAR overturned the decision, and Haaland could celebrate his fifth Premier League goal of the season. It also completed an unusual record. Haaland has now scored against all 25 clubs he has faced in the Premier League.

Haaland finally adds Sunderland to his list

Sunderland were the only side missing before Sunday’s game, having kept Haaland out in both Premier League meetings last season.

He looked in danger of drawing another blank after putting a good opportunity wide before half-time, but eventually got his goal with nine minutes remaining. West Ham have suffered most against Haaland, conceding 11 times in eight meetings, while he has scored ten against both Crystal Palace and Wolves. His nine Manchester derby goals also make him the leading scorer in that fixture in the Premier League.

Sunderland proved rather more stubborn. It took Haaland until his third meeting with them to score. There are three opponents he needed considerably less time to work out. Sheffield United, Luton Town and Coventry City have each faced him only once in the Premier League, and he scored in all three games.

Another remarkable Haaland record

Sunday’s goal took Haaland to 117 in 137 Premier League appearances since arriving at City in 2022. Only 22 players have scored more since the competition began in its current form in 1992.

He has five goals from five league appearances this season and seven in seven across all competitions, having already won the Premier League Golden Boot three times in his first four campaigns in England.

Haaland was not City’s main attacking story against Sunderland. Antoine Semenyo scored twice, while Enzo Fernandez and Rayan Cherki were also on target as Brian Brobbey’s hat-trick repeatedly threatened City’s perfect start to the league season.

Haaland still finished the afternoon with another goal to his name. Sunderland had resisted him longer than any other Premier League opponent he has faced. At the third attempt, they finally joined the other 24.
