After relinquishing the league title to Liverpool and Arsenal in the last two years, there will be many City fans who see the Premier League as the most important competition for the club this season. A domestic triumph is always important, of course, but victory on the European stage might have more of an impact for Enzo Maresca’s side.
Even with all the trophies won over the years under Pep Guardiola’s stewardship, there was only one Champions League to celebrate, and it can be argued that it is success in the most prestigious club competition of them all that will really put City in the truly elite tier when it comes to world football.
The new EPL season has now kicked off, but it is the draw for the Champions League that has really got the fans excited. Progress from the league phase is a must, with the very recent memory of being eliminated by Real Madrid in the playoff round acting as a huge reminder of how important finishing in the top eight is. Most of the sportsbooks profiled on www.onlinesportsbetting.net don’t have City as the favorite to lift the famous trophy next June, but can we realistically dream of this team winning it all again?
The Season Ahead
It has been a summer of profound change at the Etihad. Guardiola leaving has had – and will continue to have – a huge impact on every aspect of the team’s performance this season. Unsurprisingly, there has been a mini-exodus of big names from what will now be referred to as “the Pep era”, giving City a new look for the 2026-27 campaign.
Performances and results in the league have been impressive in the early weeks of the season, after a Community Shield defeat to Arsenal that concerned many. There have not been too many new arrivals to work with, so the squad should be ready for the season ahead. A domestic league challenge should be expected, but not without putting everything into the Champions League campaign as well.
Champions League Opponents
The draw for the league phase of the Champions League threw up some intriguing games, with some very familiar faces. City will play some of the favorites to win the competition, but the fixtures do give Maresca’s side a chance to show their strength before the knockout rounds begin.
City needed 16 points to qualify automatically for the round of 16 last season, and that total should be achievable this year too. Home games against PSG, Napoli, and Sporting will all be tough, but six points should be expected from those at the very least. Another three against AEK and then wins against Porto, Leipzig, and Lens away would easily see the team through.
City might feel a little unlucky that its top-seeded league phase opponents are such powerhouses. Even the pot two opponents are the ones most fans would consider the best in that tier. But the distribution of the home and away games for City has largely been kind to Maresca’s side.
The game against Barcelona at the Camp Nou will be the one that really stands out to most people, with a chance for this new City team to test itself against one of the very best, as well as for everyone to appreciate Rodri in his new surroundings. Finishing the initial phase with games against Lens and Sporting could also prove to be beneficial if City still needs points to ensure a high finish. A good showing in the league phase will really help with seeding for the knockout stages.
Favorites
After disappointment in this competition in the last two years, City finds itself further down the list of favorites than it would like. PSG has been tipped to make it three in a row, while Arsenal is the English team the pundits and experts feel has the best chance from this country. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are also more fancied than City this season.
But the truth is that there will be a lot of pressure on PSG to win a third consecutive title, and the next tier of teams are all really at the same level when it comes to being ready to take over from the Parisian club. City can go into this competition confident of doing well, so a good showing in the league phase is vital.

City in Europe
Although City has dominated the domestic game for the last 15 years or so, the return in Europe has probably been the most disappointing aspect of the modern era, Just one Champions League triumph is not enough for a club considered to be one of the biggest in the world, and there have been too many times that City has failed to get past the quarterfinals for it to be considered truly great.
The last two years have shown that there is no divine right for City to go far in the competition, even with some of the best players in the world. Draws may have been unkind, but City should not be putting itself in the position to have to win playoff ties to progress in the Champions League.
The English Premier League will rightly be the priority at the beginning of the season, as City looks to win back a title that it almost regarded as its own in the last decade. But once the European campaign gets going, it is vitally important that the team play with purpose and drive from the very beginning. City needs another Champions League triumph to prove that it is truly elite – and this could be the season when the European pieces all fall into place.
