City’s search for attacking reinforcements could reveal plenty about the direction Enzo Maresca wants to take the team.
The club have been linked with a number of young wingers this summer, including RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, as they assess their options in the wide areas.
However, the need for another winger could depend on what happens with Savinho.
The Brazilian enjoyed a promising first season after arriving from Girona, but interest from Tottenham – with talks reported to be very advanced – means City must consider whether changes are needed in their attacking ranks.
If Savinho leaves, Maresca and City’s recruitment team will face a familiar challenge: finding a player who can add quality now while also fitting the club’s long-term approach.
That is where a player such as Diomande would fit the profile City have often targeted.
The 19-year-old is viewed as one of Europe’s emerging attacking talents, with his pace, direct running and ability to beat defenders making him an attractive option. City may have left it too late, but the point remains. He’d have been an excellent fit.
Winger conundrum
City have previously invested in young wide players with room to develop. Jeremy Doku arrived from Rennes as one of Europe’s most exciting dribblers, while Savinho joined after impressing during Girona’s excellent season.
The challenge, though, is that City are rarely the only major club looking at this type of player.
Diomande has also been linked with big interest from PSG – which appears to be his preference – and Liverpool, meaning any potential move would be far from straightforward.
For Maresca, the question is not simply whether City sign another winger. It is how he wants his attacking players to function.
City have traditionally relied on wide players who can stretch the pitch, create chances and contribute goals. The next addition must fit alongside the qualities already within the squad, including Phil Foden, Ryan Cherki, Doku and Omar Marmoush.
That balance will be important as Maresca begins to put his own mark on the side.
City have shown a willingness to plan in the transfer market. Their recruitment has often focused on identifying players before they become established.
The decision over their next winger will show whether they continue that approach or look for a more immediate solution.
Either way, the position is one worth watching as the new season approaches. Just don’t expect Diomande to be the answer.
