Enzo Maresca Tracks Multiple Manchester City Stars In World Cup Clash

Erling Haaland has turned Manchester City’s World Cup story into something more complicated than a goals tally.

Norway’s quarter-final against England now places Enzo Maresca on both sides of the same workload problem. One group of City players will go out this weekend. Another will move deeper into the tournament.

Manchester City’s official reaction piece captured Haaland’s surprise after Norway’s 2-1 win over Brazil, with the striker saying he could not quite believe the run. City’s match report added the key detail: Haaland scored twice, moved to seven goals for the tournament and helped Norway reach their first World Cup quarter-final.

England’s 3-2 win over Mexico set up the next test. The England match centre recorded a dramatic last-16 victory at the Azteca, where Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane added a penalty.

For City, the interest sits on both sides. Haaland leads Norway’s attack. England’s squad includes Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly, Elliot Anderson and James Trafford.

A Quarter-Final With City On Both Sides

This is a high-profile international tie, but it also creates a practical club issue.

Haaland has carried Norway deep into the tournament. Reuters reported that his late double knocked out Brazil and put Norway into the last eight for the first time.

England have City-linked players spread across defence, midfield and goalkeeping depth. Guehi, O’Reilly and Anderson all started against Mexico, while Trafford was named among the substitutes.

Maresca will welcome the quality of the experience. He will not welcome the shrinking recovery window.

The quarter-final is not a low-stress friendly. It is a World Cup tie in Miami, with a semi-final place attached.

Maresca Must Manage Different Returns

The hardest part for City is not simply counting minutes. Haaland’s role for Norway carries a wider emotional load. He is their main forward, Golden Boot contender and national reference point.

England’s City group brings a different challenge. O’Reilly’s tournament has become a useful development step. Guehi’s defensive responsibility has grown. Anderson is still moving through a City transition while playing in England’s midfield. Trafford remains part of the same international environment.

Maresca cannot treat every return in the same way. City will need individual plans once the tournament ends for each player.

Read Man City has already covered how Haaland’s reaction created an immediate pre-season issue. England’s progress now adds the other side of the same problem.

A Norway win would send Haaland deeper into history and bring England’s City group back earlier. An England win would return Haaland sooner, but push several City players toward the final week.

Either outcome helps one part of Maresca’s squad and complicates another. That is why this tie matters beyond the result. City are watching form, resilience, fatigue and return dates at the same time.
