Manchester City have been handed another World Cup timing issue after England survived a chaotic 3-2 win over Mexico to reach the quarter-finals.
England’s official match centre confirmed Jude Bellingham’s quick-fire double and Harry Kane’s penalty sealed the last-16 victory in Mexico City, after Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez had scored for the co-hosts.
The same report listed three City players in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI: Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly and Elliot Anderson. James Trafford was named among the substitutes.
For City, the result extends a familiar World Cup theme. Enzo Maresca’s squad is gaining valuable tournament experience, but the number of players still involved is also making his first pre-season harder to manage.
City Trio Survive Azteca Test
The conditions made England’s win more demanding. Reuters reported that the match was delayed by an hour because of adverse weather near the Azteca Stadium, while Al Jazeera noted the ground sits 2,240 metres above sea level.
The second half added further pressure. Sky Sports reported that Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute, forcing England to defend with 10 men for much of the half.
Guehi and O’Reilly were both booked during the game, while Anderson was also cautioned before England closed out the tie. From a City perspective, it was a demanding night for players expected to be part of Maresca’s early plans.
The upside is clear enough. Three defensive and midfield assets have now banked knockout minutes in one of the tournament’s most testing environments.
The cost is the calendar. England’s progression, with Norway and Erling Haaland waiting next, pushes another group of City players further away from a clean summer reset.
Read Man City has already covered how Haaland’s Norway run has created a separate workload issue for Maresca. England’s escape now places City interests on both sides of the quarter-final.
Maresca will welcome the experience his players are gaining. His more immediate challenge is making sure the value of that tournament run does not become a problem when City regroup in Manchester.
