Manchester City are reportedly set to appoint Enzo Maresca after reaching a compensation agreement with Chelsea for the Italian coach. The development moves City closer to installing the former Chelsea head coach as Pep Guardiola’s successor at the Etihad Stadium, with the agreement said to be worth around £17m.
Maresca, 45, worked at City as part of Guardiola’s staff before taking charge of Leicester City and then Chelsea. His proposed return would therefore be more than a standard managerial appointment: it would bring back a coach already familiar with City’s structure, positional-game principles and dressing-room expectations.
Why The Maresca Agreement Matters For City
The key update is the compensation, because that was the obstacle between City and a formal appointment. The Sun reports that Manchester City have agreed compensation with Chelsea, leaving Maresca on the brink of signing a three-year contract.
For City supporters, the focus now turns to how quickly the club can confirm the move and let Maresca shape pre-season planning. Guardiola’s departure after a decade in charge leaves a huge tactical and emotional gap, but City appear to have chosen continuity over a full reset.
Maresca’s Chelsea spell ended abruptly in January, yet his City background makes him an obvious fit for a squad built around control, rotation and technical dominance. If the agreement is followed by confirmation, City can move from succession talks to the more urgent work of rebuilding momentum before the new Premier League season.
